HOW VITAL IS THE GOSPEL?

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” Romans 1:16

God has ordained the preaching of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ to efficaciously call His elect to faith in Him. Faith in Christ comes by the hearing of the Word of God. God has chosen the preaching of the gospel to save sinners. Not everyone to whom the gospel is preached will be saved, nevertheless no one will be saved apart from the gospel (the good news from God declaring “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”). The gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ is the believers life, his Spiritual food, his great joy in his pilgrimage through this world. However there are many who profess faith in Christ and hold some hope of heaven which have little or no regard for the hearing of the gospel. This is a troubling position and cause for great concern. How one esteems the gospel reveals how and what he thinks of Christ because the gospel is the revelation of Him. It is no stretch of the imagination to conclude those who say within themselves, “I do not have to hear the gospel to be saved or go to heaven as long as I think of God and do the best I can”, are trusting in themselves and have little regard for Christ. We should take warning from the Word of God concerning the damnation of those who do not love the Truth - “they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth” 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12. It is true many who consistently hear the gospel do not necessarily believe on Christ and love Him. However it is equally as true those who do believe on Christ and love Him, love His gospel and His people, and desire to consistently hear Him declared in His glorious Person and redemptive work. This is not just a judgment call on this preachers part, it is the truth of God’s Word - “For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God” 1Co 1:18.
