MERCY - A COVENANT PROMISE

“For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.” Hebrews 8:12

Our Heavenly Father graciously reveals to His people their sinnerhood and their great need for mercy. All those to whom He reveals this, He reveals His promise to forgive as well. All of mankind have sinned and come short of the glory of God, but only those for whom Christ died know it in the experience of grace. It is the unalterable purpose of Jehovah - God Our Saviour - to show mercy to His chosen ones in Jesus Christ our Lord. This is a covenant promise of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit. God does not show mercy to us because we deserve mercy or because we need mercy (although we DO need mercy!). He is merciful to us because He is pleased to do so, and has sworn to do so, and He cannot lie. We deserve (in our own right) to be banished from the presence of God and His Son forever. But, thanks be unto Him Who loved us and gave Himself for us, we will live in His presence forever. This wondrous covenant mercy is executed and revealed in the Person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ. God laid on His blessed Son all the iniquity of all His people. He suffered the wrath of God, being my Substitute. I was (am) worthy of the wrath and condemnation of God Almighty. But now, because of Him, I will never, no never, no never, experience it! He has sworn it shall be so! Christ made it sure according to His Word. Christ lived, died, arose from the dead and is now on the throne of His glory ever living to make intercession for His people. Nothing could be more sure and certain! Heaven and earth shall pass away but His mercy endureth forever. By His grace we will never despair. The more we become conscious of our sin…much more He reveals His abundant mercy for great sinners - “their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.”
