SOVEREIGN MERCY

“For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.” Hebrews 8:12

This is one of the most astounding declarations of Almighty God in all of the scriptures! This is strictly the desire and purpose of the infinite thrice Holy God. There is no account to be given of the objects of His mercy as to the cause or application of His mercy. Of His own free will, according to His good pleasure He will be merciful to the objects of His everlasting love. The manifestation of this sovereign mercy is revealed in only one person and in only one way; In His blessed Son and by the preaching of the gospel of His free grace. It is singularly owing to Christ and His redemptive work that we do not perish without mercy.

I'm not ashamed of Thy Free Grace,
When Thou came and took my place.
Blessed Lord, How merciful Thou art to me.
When this world ceases to be,
Eternal blood shall speak for me,
Blessed Lord, How merciful Thou art to me.

“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us …” Titus 3:5. The objects of His mercy, when Christ is revealed to them, are forever thankful to Him and desire to be committed to Him who withheld the sword of justice from them and plunged it through the heart of their Substitute. God’s sovereign mercy to wretched sinners is incomprehensible in scope yet the truth of it is so simple and singular as revealed in Christ. As a matter of fact it is such that but few believe it because of it’s simplicity and the pride of their unbelieving hearts. Neither would you and I were it not for His SOVEREIGN MERCY!
